 Are you having trouble sleeping? When you are reasonably new to Paleo you may find yourself eating at inappropriate times mainly by snacking or possibly eating the wrong foods for the time of day.

are you having trouble sleepingIt is very easy to find yourself snacking because your body hasn’t become accustomed to the different food regime it is now following. Perhaps your portion sizes are different as you have not yet got used to the new regime. But this is one of the places that should not be ignored if your sleep pattern has changed.

A major cause in the change of a sleep pattern can be caused by the food you eat. There are some foods that cause your digestive system to be too busy for the rest of the body to switch off and allow the sleep pattern to take over.

Sleep is very necessary to us all and although some survive on less sleep than others you have to remember that when we are at rest and sleeping our body is repairing and rejuvenating itself ready to cope with the stresses and strains of the next day.

Remember the old saying ‘you are what you eat’. So you do not want to be eating anything which may upset your sleep pattern late in the evening. One food type you need to avoid is carbs. Carbs will trigger an insulin release which will stop the body from burning the fat you have. You do not want this to happen as the metabolism naturally slows during the evening.

When you have the munchies late in the evening try and choose a slow digesting protein such as turkey or chicken. These will not cause the release of insulin. Eating nuts  which have healthy fats will slow gastric emptying while increasing the feeling of fullness.

Correct Foods

Are you eating the correct foods, or are you just eating what you think are the correct foods. Many people follow diets blindly just doing as they are told and eating what they are told without questioning the whys and wherefores.

correct foodsIf you are following any kind of diet whether or not it is paleo  you must make sure you are eating enough of the right foods. Most diets just rationalize and do not think about the different body types and the way different people react to different foods.

If you are on a diet and you start feeling unwell you need to find the reason for the ill feeling. Perhaps you are genuinely ill and need to see a physician or maybe you have eaten something that disagrees with you. Often new diets will bring you new foods and a different taste to what you are used to.

Correct Foods

Have you radically changed the type of foods you would normally consume? Are you sure you are cooking them correctly? If you have changed your diet from being heavily biased to protein and are now heavily biased towards carbohydrates you are likely to feel unwell while your body gets used to the new regime. The same would be true if you went from a mainly carbohydrate diet to a protein one.

Perhaps since changing what you are eating has made you feel better in yourself, in which case you were probably not eating the correct foods before.

With the new foods you are eating you have to consider the preparation of those foods along with cooking of them. Are they under or over cooked? As you are not sure what some of them should taste like it is not always easy to tell by taste alone. If there are pictures of the meal you have cooked there may be pictures you can compare the dish with. If not it is a case of checking that everything you have used is fresh and has been cooked for the required amount of time.

Keep changing the foods you are eating until the foods you are using are to your taste and are agreeing with your body.(i.e. you feel well and on top of the world). You are now eating the correct foods irrespective of what any diet tells you. You can fine tune and substitute what you are eating and as long as there are no detrimental effects you can add the new food to your safe list of foods.

organic vegetablesThe best way to ensure you eat only organic vegetables is to grow your own. Here I will give you information on 5 easy to grow vegetables that you know will be organic.

The first thing you will need is a plot of land that you can till and grow vegetables in. If you are in an apartment and you have a balcony/veranda then you can use growing pots or otherwise you can use window boxes  or even hanging baskets.

The five easy to grow organic vegetables are radishes, beets, sugar snap peas, lettuce and carrots.

Organic Vegetables

Let’s start with radishes. Sow them 1/2″ deep about 1″ apart. Keep the soil damp by watering at least twice a day. They should be ready to harvest in 4 weeks. If you sow some every 2 weeks you will have a constant harvest through the spring and summer months.

Beets/Beetroot are a good crop because you can use the leaves and the root. Plant 3seeds every 4″ 0.75″ deep. Do not over water, but keep the ground moist! Should be able to harvest in 60 to 90 Days. Don’t forget to use the leaves as well as the roots.

Sugar snap peas take a little longer to grow but are well worth the effort. They can take from 11 to 13 weeks to be ready to harvest.

Lettuce can be harvested throughout the year if you use the correct cultivars. In the warmer months it is a quick crop vegetable. By fortnightly sowings you can have a constant supply of lettuces.

Carrots are the last of the organic vegetables I am going to discuss today. The carrot is another vegetable that can be harvested throughout the year if you plant the correct types. They are usually ready to harvest after 12 to 16 weeks. The smaller carrots are usually sweeter and give a better flavor.

paleo cookbooksHow often have you wished you had paleo cookbooks of one sort or another to hand? Often, always, occasionally,  or never? If you are like me and used to make dishes up from the ingredients that you had available at the time then you would not have had much use for cookbooks. Although of course I did use cookbooks in my early days of cooking. By not using paleo cookbooks when you are first starting out on the paleo trail you run the risk of using non paleo ingredients. When you do this you are unlikely to get the health and weight results that you were expecting to achieve.

It stands to reason that when you are trying a new style of cooking you may need some help initially. This is where cookbooks, and in particular paleo cookbooks, come into their own. For those that have been cooking paleo for some time they may not use their paleo cookbooks anymore, but they have always got them for reference when needed.

As you develop your paleo leanings you may feel like experimenting with foods for you and your family. Keep an eye on the ingredients you are using and just how paleo they are considered to be. With any luck you will come across a new flavor that you and your family like. Yes there are likely to be some disasters in the taste stakes but you can learn from your mistakes. As an example I like what is classed as an English curry. This is a normal curry, but with the addition of fruit to sweeten it up and in my opinion give it more flavor. You can also experiment with different flavorings to find something that you really like.

If you are a good cook or a chef well into the paleo phase you may like to try your hand at developing a paleo cookbook. There are many available but there is always room for more.

what does paleo do for youWhat does paleo do for you? I know what it does for me and also for others I have spoken to. Healthy and happy jump straight to mind.

The paleo diet is one of those diets that actually make you feel healthier. That of course is because it is making you healthier. If you follow the diet strictly, then you will be eating only the foods that your body was designed to digest. Do you want to go around not feeling as great as you could? I know I don’t! I went for years feeling that something was not quite right. Little did I know at the time that the majority of my lack of good feelings was down to my diet.

What Does Paleo Do For You?

Once you are into the paleo frame of mind thing start happening. Because you are now eating the foods you body was designed to digest you will notice the improvement. But that is not the end of it. We all have differing metabolism which is or was predetermined by our genes. (i.e. It was handed down by our parents as we will hand it down to our children). Once you are feeling better then you can move into the fine tuning of your body by further eating the foods that your body can deal with better.

What Does Paleo Do For You?

What does paleo do for you? It gives me a list of the foods that everybody can use to feel better. Now I am going to fine tune my body I am going to cut out either some carbs or proteins.Personally I am going to cut down on carbs and increase the proteins.

The reason for this in my case is twofold. I am type 2 diabetic and so the carbs affect my blood sugar ratio. Not only that but I have carried out several tests that tell me I have a protein biased body metabolism. So in my case my body reacts more favorably to protein than it does to carbs. This also helps in keeping my weight stable  and also at a healthy weight.

Paleo diet metabolic typing will not only keep your weight stable but will also have you feeling much better overall. So what is metabolic typing? The link at the bottom of this article will take you to a book that I recommend you read if you really want to get your diet on track. I will however try to explain a little more about it and how it will interact with paleo here.

paleo diet metabolic typingIt does not matter whether you are trying to loose weight or just be more healthy and feel better your results can be improved by a great amount just by making sure you are eating the foods that your body can deal with in the most efficient way. It would appear that many diets avoid this part of your metabolism because it does not fit in well with their diet recommendations. This is not true of the paleo diet as you are given plenty of options of foods that are good to eat and you can remain strictly paleo. Sometimes it is a case of health over diet.

If you do obtain the book I recommend then it will show you all the tools you need to identify your own personal body type. This will start with some multiple choice questions the answers to which will give you an immediate basic metabolic type. This will just be the starting point of your paleo diet metabolic typing. Once you have your basic typing then a series of simple techniques and self tests will help you to fine tune the diet so that it becomes specific to you and your body chemistry.

Is Paleo Right For Me?

is paleo right for meIs paleo right for me is an age old question that can be asked of any diet? Of course those promoting the diet will always say yes. I have found very few diets that take into consideration your personal metabolic requirements. So when answering the question is paleo right for me I would have to answer yes, but, only if you take into consideration your primary metabolic typing.

Too many people will follow a diet without question and without checking there own metabolic or nutritional typing. Is this really important? The answer to this could stem on your personal metabolic/nutritional typing.

The are three metabolic types when it comes to nutritional typing. There is the protein type, the carbohydrate type and the mixed type. While most diets you will come across are only designed for one particular metabolism type, you are not going to gain anything from following that diet unless you are that body type.

Is Paleo Right For Me?

Paleo is right for anyone as it contains both protein and carbohydrates in the basic diet. Once you have found your nutritional body type then you can fine tune the diet to meet your body’s needs. If like me your body is of the protein type then you can adjust what you eat to match this.

So what exactly does the body typing mean? In its simplest form if you are a protein type then your body handles proteins in a far more efficient way than it does carbs. With this body type you will want to bias the foods you are eating to include more proteins and less carbs. If you are a carbohydrate type then you need to eat more carbs as this is what your body finds easier to handle. If you are a mixed type then you need to eat carbs and protein in equal amounts.

Paleo Diet Books

There are many Paleo diet books on the market, and with some there are many places to get them. Perhaps your problem is which are good and which are not so good. There is no set answer to that as different people are looking for different things when it comes to a book While I may sing the praises about a certain book you may hate it from cover to cover. To give you an example with films rather than books. I tend to go for the films that get a low rating from the critics or even those that get a slating. I do this because I know from previous knowledge I tend to enjoy those films that the critics do not. There are of course exceptions to this.

paleo diet booksO.k. back to the books. Many of the paleo sites you will find on the internet do have some kind of paleo diet books listed. Some are recipe books while others discuss paleo in more detail. Indeed I have several books listed on my ‘products’ pages. These are book that can be found in other places on the internet, but I am also allowed to promote them.

You may find some sites only carry or promote the books they write themselves. If this is the case and they don’t let others promote them, then this will be the only place to find that particular book. I have not yet written any paleo diet books and so I sell those written by others.

Time to think about what you need to buy this week. Hopefully you have already made your recipe list or your meal plans for the coming week. If that is not the case than sit down now and do it. The paleo diet grocery list can be your best friend when you get to the grocery store.

paleo diet grocery listHow often have you go home from the grocery store and found a vital ingredient missing from your supplies. When you are not sticking to any diet you can just make something else instead. This is not always easy when you are sticking to any kind of diet.

The problem now arises of do you go back to the grocery store or are you going to change today’s meal and make a note of what you need so you don’t forget it next time. Of course if you didn’t intend visiting the grocery store again this week you now have to change your plans and fit another visit in. If you don’t get the right things then you may be tempted to cook something that is not paleo. So you see how your paleo diet grocery list can easily become your best friend.

When making your paleo diet grocery list try to list items as you would come across them in the store. When you are not sure of where they are mark the items in some way so you don’t miss them. If there is an item you can’t find then ask if the store keeps that item and if they do where you can find it. It may take a little bit of getting used to, but if you can go straight to the items you need you will not be tempted by other items not on your list and worse still items that are not paleo friendly

Can such a diet be good or even suitable for athletes? Everything I have read about the paleo diet states there are no limits to the type of person taking part in the paleo diet.

the paleo diet for athletesLooking at the food eaten on the paleo diet and what an athlete needs to eat the paleo diet for athletes will fit very well with some changes to be considered during and after heavy exercise. During these periods high calorie foods outside those normally used on the paleo diet would be perfectly good.

While the athlete may have some special needs when carrying out hard exercise, there is no reason why the paleo diet would not be a good regime to follow during the periods of non exercise. There are plenty of high protein foods on the paleo diet but, some of the calories required may be missing when you stick strictly to the diet. For those that are taking part in athletics on a day to day basis in a lighter form the paleo diet is very good for them.

We are looking more at the professional athletes and sportsmen who often require far higher calorie intake than the every day casual athlete.

The Paleo Diet For Athletes

The paleo diet is a good source of energy and protein that can be followed by everyone. It is indeed of great benefit to many people. If you are going to be taking part in extreme physical exercise follow the advice of your trainer. While following the trainers advice stick to the paleo friendly foods as much as you can. If you are playing the odd game of football with a local team than just follow the paleo diet keeping it slightly heavy on the protein. There is no good reason not to follow the paleo diet while taking part in sporting events.
