Replacing Carbs With Nuts

Replacing Carbs With Nuts

replacing carbs with nutsI have recently been reading about the effect of replacing  carbs with nuts, has been having on type 2 diabetes. It got me to wondering how this is put into effect in the paleo diet. Now the reports I have been reading have not been to specific about the amount of carbs but it does state approximately 2 ounces of nuts were eaten in place of the carbs.

In those tested, who were replacing carbs with nuts, the blood sugars were less as also was their LDL cholesterol. As the paleo diet recommends nut oils and nut butters could we now be eating too many nut products? There is always the delicate balance of what is good for you and what is bad for you. The reason you have changed to the paleo diet may also be a factor.

The United States Government have even gone as far as allowing labeling on food products to read ” Diets containing one ounce of nuts per day can reduce your risk of heart disease”. There are also studies that show those eating a small amount of nuts each day¬† tend to weigh less than those not eating nuts and indeed nut eaters do tend to loose weight.

While all nuts are good for you, in moderation, some are better than others. Those best for you generally are Almonds, Cashews and Pistachios, with Almonds being the best nuts for disease prevention. All nuts eaten should be either raw or dry roasted without any salt or flavoring. Walnut are the best for preventing heart disease and peanuts are best for your brain.

The best nuts overall are mixed nuts although if you are strictly paleo you will not want peanuts to be in the mix. This can be a bit of a dilemma as peanuts are good for your brain.
